New player with questions

I got really hyped up for NMS, but then when it flopped I still had to scratch that space exploration itch so I picked this up on xbox a couple of days ago. Now I'm feeling totally overwhelmed and considering trying for a refund. I have no idea how to make money, go anywhere, do anything... all I have done for 3 hours is fly back and forth between a couple of systems (the only ones that I don't get "route plotting failed" for, and none of which contain the end point for any missions I meet the requirements for), spending 20 minutes trying to land somewhere, and trying to see if I missed something. What am I doing wrong? Is there somewhere I'm supposed to go that lets me get to the places the few missions I can accept are telling me to go?
