My old apartment is charging me $1500 for menial things. 2 part question.

Housing

Yesterday, my girlfriend told me that my old apartment charged us 1569 dollars in damages. I looked at the charges and they are ridiculously high. Most of the smaller charges I can deal with; basement clean up, painting the walls, etc. What I don't understand is how glazing a 30 year old tub and wall costs me $476. It's a very small tub and wall that was dingy and had hairline cracks when I moved in. The carpet is my other main concern. I was told that every seven years carpet is replaced, regardless of condition. Also, that the cost would be prorated (right term?) for how long I was there and how long it had been since the seven year replacement. I moved there three and a half years ago and the carpet was by no means new. Now I'm being charged $518 for that. I must admit that my pets and some wine did not keep the carpet pristine, but it was only two rooms and a short hallway that were carpeted.

My first question is: can I contest these at all, or will that stay?

My second question is: how the hell do I pay for all this?

I'm a full time student in my last year of a Bachelor's with two jobs. I have a credit card that has 3 months left of no interest, but I really don't want to have around $1000 left on there at 18% interest. My savings could help with a couple hundred, but once again, I was saving that for emergencies. My credit is 681, so a loan at a decent rate won't happen.

I appreciate all advice. Thanks!
