Main housing fan out of control after hardware change.
So I recently changed my 8GB RAM for a full 32GB in my early 2008 Mac Pro.
- early 2008 Mac Pro
- OSX El Capitan latest
- 32 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4095 MB
- Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
- CPU has been upgraded to 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
The new RAM is working just fine, but the main fan is running at constant insane speeds.
I know that the SMC is what regulates fan speed, so I tried resetting that by two recommended methods:
- Shut the machine down
- Unplug it from the power
- Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
and from another source:
- Shut the machine down
- Unplug it from the power and wait 15 seconds
- plug it back in and wait 5 seconds before turning it on
Both ways did not fix the problem. I am yet to reset the PRAM, but I know PRAM does not control the fans.
Any ideas?
P.S. I also use dual PSU's - the main one in the box and a second one outside the box for the GPU. Didn't have problems with any of that before I upgraded my RAM.
Thanks for any replies!
edit:
I reset the PRAM well. It did not change anything. But placing my old 8GB of RAM back fixed the issue. It seems it's the RAM.
The only difference between my old 8GB RAM and the new 32GB is that the old one I have is 800mhz and the new ones are the 600mhz variety.
It seems to be freaking the computer out. Going to have to settle with my old memory for now until I figure out what's wrong.
If you have any ideas, I sure would appreciate suggestions! :)
