Question about the infamous chaos event campaign crash.

Chaos lost all their armies before archaeon appeared, and when they get a doom tide, my campagin is bricked. I'm beastmen, and I'm wondering if they're ruining my campaign because they immediately declare war on my brayherd and that somehow screws things up, or if I ended my campaign the moment I sent them packing prematurely?
