[Hiring] Early Career Network Engineers - LBNL - San Francisco Bay Area
We're looking for more members of our team to support networking for scientists and researchers. I would describe these positions as "Early Career" network engineering, but these are not NOC positions - you'll config and deploy equipment. We're a multi-vendor shop (Juniper MX / Cisco 6500 (soon to be replaced) as routers, Juniper/Cisco dist/access switches, Aruba APs, Arista tap aggregation) and have roughly 80 buildings we support across our main campus and satellite sites. Our team is currently 9 people, with a 10th starting in Sep/Oct.
A bit about us: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a US Department of Energy facility operated by the University of California (all your benefits are through the university and carry over for existing UC employees). Originally started as the University of California Radiation Laboratory, LBNL was the first to synthesize plutonium as part of the Manhattan Project, and has been involved in the discoveries of several other elements including berkelium, californium, lawrencium and seaborgium. We have had 13 Nobel Laureates, two of which (Smoot and Perlmutter) still have offices in the same complex as our team.
LBNL is the home of several facilities, including the:
-
Advanced Light Source
-
Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator
-
Energy Sciences Network
-
Joint Genome Institute at Walnut Creek
-
National Center for Electron Microscopy
-
National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center
(Among many others)
Have you ever used traceroute? What about libpcap or tcpdump? All three were developed at LBNL, and one of the contributors still works with our team.
Also, our primary ASN is 16.
If you love science and have a passion for networking, check out the job posting:

(Note: There are multiple open positions to be filled at either Level 1 or Level 2 depending on experience. These are 1-year term positions, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. While these positions require a background check, LBNL is an unclassified facility so security clearance is not required.)
Feel free to ask me questions as well!
