White box plugged into wall with a button on the side -- whats it do?

On a mobile so sorry for a wonky layout

I found this white box plugged into an outlet in the living room when I moved into my apartment. It has a button on the side, but I haven't tried pressing it. The landlord can't remember what it is either.
