What's the consensus on psychic mediums?

My mother and her friend are both self-proclaimed Christians but her friend claims to also be a psychic medium, and my mother believes her. This seems to be a bit contradictory to the religion that asks you to defer to god to handle the afterlife. What's the deal here? Thanks!
