Do these legendary directors know that sometimes they are making a mediocre movie?

For example, do you think Michael Mann knew that Blacklist would be average, knowing that he used to create masterpieces like Heat and Collateral.

Or that Ridley Scott knows that he isnt creating an iconic movie like Alien/Gladiator/Blade Runner when he was making Exodus Gods and Kings.

Or that Spielberg was when creating something like War Horse, thinking like "I am not going to keep making memorable movies like Indiana Jones trilogy, Jaws, Schindlers List and Jurassic Park".
