[NEWS]United States 2044 Election Results
New York Times -- Tom Garcia has been elected the 50th President of the United States on Tuesday.
Garcia has had a remarkable career, being the youngest man ever being elected to Senate at the age of 25. His twenty eight year career saw several success, such as a repeal of the Influenza Emergency Act, the Magic Mushrooms Act, and the Balloon Prohibition Act of 2018. .
The Mr Garcia has overseen the return of the presidency to the Democratic Party, and the recapture of the Senate. The 2040 elections were punishing from the Democrats and the Greens, who both had to concede many seats in Congress to the rejuvenated GOP.
Although Stefanik presided over some difficult times, most Americans find that she did a decent job (62% approval rating). Being a wartime president is a stressful ordeal but even during hard times, Stefanik managed to keep morale up, in part due to her inspiring State of the Union speeches.
The Green Party has held it's ground during this election cycle. It was clear from the start that it would be impossible for a Green Party candidate to be a serious contender for the Presidency during a large war, and thus the Greens did not field a notable candidate. The Greens focussed on regaining seats lost to the Republicans and Democrats, and due to the fact that more attention was given to the local campaigns as a result of this strategy, the Greens managed to recoup some of the damage suffered in 2040, dismissing claims and fears that the Greens were about to be evicted from Congress.
The Greens push for the presidency had similarities to the 2036 Democratic campaign, during which the latter completely failed to find a suitable candidate to challenge then presidential nominee Stefanik.
Eventually, Rachel Bertha Cecilia Diana Emily Stevenson, Governor of Oregon, was chosen by the Green voters to lead the charge. While her attempt was admirable, it was very clear from the start the contest would be between Joseph McKenzie and Tom Garcia.
McKenzie, 57 year old Governor of Georgia, actually gained significantly on Garcia during the last few weeks leading up the election, but poor showings during the debates hampered his progress. McKenzie appeared tired and maybe even exhausted compared to the energetic Garcia. Perhaps this was due to the fact that McKenzie campaigned in a stunning 46 states, compared to Garcia's 14. However the latter's outreach to younger voters and minorities was much more successful than that of McKenzie.
McKenzie's points resounded well with older voters and he was generally seen as more experienced in domestic matters. However, Garcia spend most of his time in Senate on foreign affair and defense committees, giving the impression that he would be a better wartime president.
However, the Republicans were successful in the House, maintaining their dominance. However, the Democrats retook Senate superiority, helped by a number of high profile scandals involving GOP Senators, such as Senator Electra Montre's (AZ) war racketeering scandal.
