Are there any meds (prescription or otherwise) for shingles/post-shingles itch? Because it is driving me insane!

I came down with shingles three weeks ago. My self diagnosis was confirmed by an emergency doctor (phone-a-doc) who prescribed a week of Valtrex, 2 grams a day. The blistering and redness and eye-swelling quickly abated as did the stabbing pain in my head. Unfortunately what remains is intense itching where the shingles was (were?) appearing -- on my forehead, hairline, and around my eye. The itching makes it so I can't sleep and I've been taking my prescription Xanax or Ambien but do not want to become addicted. Is there anything else that might help? Thanks!
