John C. Breckenridge CSA President?

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and knew someone here would have an answer. Why was John C. Breckenridge never considered for the Presidency of the Confederacy? He had USA VP experience, and had just ran an 1860 presidential campaign so he seems like a natural fit for me. Any thoughts?
