Multi-tool theory

So I was just thinking what if the multi-tool is a necessary aspect of opening the portals, however, what if the portals only react to a certain multi-tool within a faction? I have gotten multiple dopplegangers to appear on the same planet so what if you have to find the right portal with the right tool complete with its pre-configured setup? Maybe someone has tried this?
