Why use Parameter Files?

Starting a new re-control project and the old HMI project in View SE doesn't tag anything directly. Everything has a parameter file link and I'm getting super lost trying to understand the system as it exists now. We're talking about 300-400 tags on a screen all hidden behind #101, #102, #103 and so on.

These screens aren't used more than once, which is the only time I would think Parameter files should be used. Anyone else seen crazy Parameter-filled projects?
