[Spoilers S2E9] Designer Babies

Rather than being AI, would it make more sense if Elliot (and possibly other characters) are designer babies?

Instead of being an AI program/hybrid or transhuman, Elliot and others would be genetically modified humans. Rather than being programmed or brainwashed at an early age, Elliot and others were designed before they were even born.

Designer babies is something that scientists believe may be possible in our lifetime.
So i don't think it would be too sci-fi an idea for Mr. Robot.
