Unbearable shingles/post-shingles itch. Any meds for that? Can someone help me make it through Labor Day?
I came down with shingles three weeks ago. My self diagnosis was confirmed by an emergency doctor (phone-a-doc) who prescribed a week of Valtrex, 2 grams a day. Got in to see my PCP who said the phone-a-doc hadn't prescribed enough, so wrote me a scrip for 10 more days of Valtrex, 3 grams a day. The blistering and redness and eye-swelling quickly abated as did the stabbing pain in my head. Unfortunately what remains is intense itching where the shingles was (were?) appearing -- on my forehead, hairline, and around my eye. The itching makes it so I can't sleep and I've been taking my prescription Xanax or Ambien but do not want to become addicted. Is there anything else that might help? Thanks!
(x-posted somewhere...just feeling desperate. And with the holiday weekend coming up, I'm terrified of having to go through days and days of this.)
Thanks in advance.
