How to get to know a boy (as a boy)

So i ran into this guy a couple of times but never got to talk to him and i think hes quite cute and i'd like to get to know him. I think hes in one of my classes but its a large class—probably over 100 students, so its hard to strategically sit next to him. Im not expecting a relationship or anything out of this but i just need to know how to start a natural conversation that isn't forced and awkward? I feel like without sitting next to him there would be no point in a conversation and it'd feel forced and awkward. And, just curious, would you find it awkward if someone started a conversation with you just because you recognize them? Thank you
