What would be the best substrate to use if I plan on keeping Kuhli loach?

I know that rough gravel can hurt them. Is eco complete a bad choice? I like the idea of a black sand but some people have told me it can destroy filters. I'll be starting a new 40 gallon breeder and want to make sure I do my research.
