Programming 101

What are some tools, books, etc on how to get the 101 on programming? I'm literally coming in with a blank mind. I want to make a change with my career and I want to focus on more of the gaming aspect. I've heard schooling only teaches so much and there's a ton of free source out there. Basically, what do I need to know/learn in order to make some small indie style games?

Also, what kind of laptop should I get? Budget is somewhat open because I know I want to invest in this for the long haul. Is Mac better than PC for programming? What are the most common computers/operating systems that I would see at an employer?
