Could any former or current dispatchers fill me in on what could be waiting?
I have been working at my current place of employment now for going on four years. I am a Tech leader at a plant that makes air bag inflators. I'm over four operators and nine machines. The majority of my day consists of troubleshooting mechanical failure and quality assurance. I make somewhat decent, approximately 30,000 a year. However, as of late, I have come to be extremely dissatisfied. I have decided that I have done my time, and it is time to venture outside of manufacturing.
I have tried filling out applications and submitting resumes to a few different places. Recently, one of my wife's friends told her about our county sheriff's office hiring for dispatch (Police, fire, EMS, etc). I've been lead to believe that I have a pretty fair shot of being accepted. I am fully aware that if I do transition, I will be taking a considerable pay cut initially, but I will be making roughly the same after I have went through with my certifications. I'm not so concerned with that as I am with feeling fulfilled. I would love to work somewhere and do something that doesn't make me dread getting up in the morning. My question is what would be waiting for me if I accept this job. What is it like? What is a typical day? I want to know what I would be getting into before I took another job for less pay, without knowing if it is something that I think I would like. Otherwise, I would rather keep looking while staying at my current job making what I make now.
Thank you in advance for any replies.
