What anti virus software would you recommend for a first time PC owner?

Hi there, I'm a first year software development student who currently is on the market for a PC.

I already have a Macbook, but lately I've been wanting a PC for gaming and general use. I'm unfamiliar with anti virus software, and I've heard that some can be a waste of money.

What would you recommend? Also if you have any other PC safety tips please feel free to include them!
