Asked AT&T (formerly Cingular) about Call Type Codes
I searched all over the place for what the Call Type Codes mean on the Cingular phone bill. I finally broke down and just IM'd AT&T's customer service on the slim chance that they could help me. Surprisingly they did! The 'No Call ID' calls on 11/4 have a call type of D and all the other calls on the bill have a Air code of Incl (Included) but these calls all have '0.00' instead. The D call type is for Data and the CS Rep explained this would be for data calls like Skype (they originally gave examples like FaceTime and WhatsApp but I don't think those features/apps existed in 2005). Another thing I noticed as I put this post together is that his bill is an Alltel bill - AT&T acquired a portion of Alltel in 2009. (Edited words and to add: Verizon acquired some of Alltel in 2008 so I suppose either company could have answered that question).
So, if these are Data calls, not regular phone calls, that would explain why there is no caller ID. I found a forum discussion on another site where they explain that you could tether your phone to a laptop to make data calls. I suspect that this is what these line items are, not necessarily regular incoming phone calls like we originally thought.
ETA: There are other D call types that are incoming calls and the caller id is shown as well as 'incl' on the Air type. So I don't know why these 22 calls were different.
Update: Im pretty convinced that the 22 'calls' were instant voice communications like touch2talk. Alltel offered this feature at that time and were promoting it. I found a slide show from Kodak the company that provided the technology to Alltel. This PP is from 2004. The coverage area shown in other slides shows the areas west of MC had coverage but MC did not yet. Here are links showing that Alltel specifically had LE in mind when promoting this service.
