Just got a Personal Cellspot(Signal Booster)

I just got the ASUS Personal Cellspot. Can someone please explain how this is different than a router? They said it would boost my cell signal. When I got this, it's just a router and the directions say to enable wifi-calling to use it. Why did I need this to use wifi-calling? I am very confused and TMobile support is awful.
