2009 Mazda3. Blown head gasket. Engine is kill. Car is kill. Should I even consider an engine replacement?

Car Details:

2.3L Engine

Automatic Transmission

trim: Touring Hatchback

Accessories: Nothing aftermarket, completely stock

Miles: 130k

A coolant line in my car sprang a leak on the interstate. At 75 mph I noticed it suddenly sounded funny and looked over the instruments to see that it was staggeringly overheated. (Sure, it screams at me if my tires are a few pounds low, but doesn't bother alerting me when the temperature shoots through the damn roof. What the hell, car designers?)

So I get the system pressure checked, they find a loose hose going into my reservoir and tighten it up, flush and replace the coolant, etc.

Car overheats again. Again, "The hell did my coolant go?"

Coolant reservoir hydrocarbon test comes back positive. (Cue being mad they didn't test this in the first place, given the severe overheat it took.) I take it to my Oh Shit Mechanic - the kind who doesn't advertise but employs half a dozen other mechanics and is booked up for a month. He runs the most trusted shop in town.

He takes a look at it and tells me that the engine has suffered severe damage (something about the bottom of the cylinders) and needs to be replaced.

Blue book private sale is around 4.5K before the blown engine. After: "lol"

Used engine and labor costs 3.9K. A used engine has 38K miles on it.

I'm the only owner the car has ever had.

I think the junk yard scrap value would be $500-1000.

So as I asked - is this even something I should consider?
