My first ever viewing of the Original Ghostbusters in 2016

I'm kind of a 90's kid so i didn't really grow up with GB but i've heard about it a LOT everywhere, its like the more modern equivalent of "Frankenstein" you may have never watched it but EVERYONE and their mother instantly recognizes that name. That's pretty much GB but even with all the praise&tribute it never piqued my interest until the internet shitstorm about an all female GB and the "apparent" sexist backlash to that.

So, i figured why not re-watch the original and see what the fuss is all about and i was very underwhelmed by the movie because the hype&popularity behind the movie is INSANE! The only 2 characters that stand out in this movie are Dr.Venkman and that ecoterrotist who says "If he does that again.. you can shoot him!" but other characters(even if played by great actors) are pretty shallow and not really all that funny.

Sigonrney weaver's character is some bland no-name woman living in an apartment who gets kidnapped and then rescued. The glasses wearing Ghostbuster(idk the name) is just always mumbling nonsense "We gotta use the Protonic de-stabilizer cum guzzling hydrofluoric acid to reverse nipple clamp generator!" IMO he doesn't make for much of an interesting character. And the the black guy who joins late seems to be just there as a token character there's nothing much interesting with him either.

And there's nothing much to the story, its just a bunch of guys who're "ghostbusters" its never clearly explained what exactly they do to catch ghosts or how they got into this paranormal activity in the first place or why there are different types of ghosts like green cartoony ghosts and normal human like ones, and they just kinda skip to the part where they're super famous.

And then there's this incredibly anti-climatic final showdown where they zap some gargolgyes&break the mirror or something and that it! i was honestly expecting to see him go to the Zuul dimension and kick ass there but NOPE that was it! explosion to the building is enough to defeat an ancient God, honestly the army could've wiped out that building off the map, there was no need for the ghostbusters.

I just don't see why everyone adores this movie so much, bill&that ecoterrorist guy are funny but that's about it. Everyone else is just a bland dry character, its not a typical comedy movie like where everyone is self-aware of the world they're in. Its like they were given a goofy script but were told to act seriously without any sarcasm or irony. I was really expecting a cheesy, fun 80's comedy movie but i've seen horror movies from the 80's that had more self-aware cheese than this movie, GB is in a weird limbo where its not quite sure what tone it wants to go with, a goofy romp or a serious movie with comedic overtones like men in black.

So that's my unbiased take on GB anyway! i love the concept of how technology is being used to defeat supernatural phenomenon but its just not fleshed out or explored in an interesting way, from most fans i've heard that this is the BEST GB movie so i guess i'll give GB2&reboot a chance sometime later cus i may actually like GB2&reboot(though reboot does seem like a scene by scene copy of GB1)
