I'm really dissapointed by this Colin Kaepernick situation
I'm from a small Texas town so I have been of course flooded with memes and image macros deriding CK for not standing during the pledge of allegiance, and I suppose it's not even really people being pissed off about it that bothers me. It's the self-righteousness and lack of vision that just bugs the hell out of me. There is a famous picture that springs to mind Of the man who didnt salute Hitler. And inb4 people saying I'm comparing America, or the troops or whatever to Nazis. I'm not, let's divorce the message from the medium. But we all look at this picture and say "That would be me. I would do the right thing. I would take a stand for what I believe in. But then we see somebody during our modern time taking a stand for what they believe in and we say "If you don't like it leave" or "You hate the troops somehow because you are taking a stand for something you believe in" or even "You're a terrorist somehow for doing this". When did dissent become so unpatriotic? When did the message become that if you are a good American you won't stand up for what you believe in? Of course anyone can look at the picture of the guy who didnt salute Hitler and say that would totally be us, because we're in the future, we KNOW that guy was right. But how many of those people around him said how big of a piece of shit he was? (again, not comparing us to Nazis so if you want to complain about that I dont care). Also, how many of these people saying that CK is a troop hater have every done anything to actually support the troops? Like donating time or money to causes to directly help out? Or vote on legislation/legislators who actually help the troops and not just rabble rouse about it? Or is it just too easy to say to ourselves "I support the troops AND do the right thing by standing during the pledge of allegiance, so I don't need to do anything else". Maybe if we were a little more critical about shit like these we could actually start making some positive changes. TL;DR Nope
