The Use of 'Montage' as a Mechanic

Discussion

In film, montage is a technique to show the quick passage of time by tightly editing a sequence of events. It's often used as a vehicle for quick change or growth in a character, like training montages in action movies.

Much of a video game's motivation and meaning derives from changing your character over time. This change is often a fixed time, consistent throughout the game. In the Mega Man series, whenever you defeat a boss you gain their power - it's fixed, predictable, and part of the game loop; similarly in many RPGs your character changes when you gain a level - it's fixed and clear. To achieve these changes in character, you must utilize the game's mechanics to progress the character to a point in time when they are allowed to change; that is to say growth and change in a video game's character isn't a mechanic in itself, rather it's a motivation for the use of the mechanics.
I might be getting a little sidetracked here... anyone want to help me finish this idea?... So I'm wondering if there is a way to use montage as a mechanic to change the way games introduce growth in their characters...
