Question about particle board.

Hey, so I have never wood worked in my life but I want to. So i am curious if you can sand down particle board, I have a bunch from my desk. I would like to take these parts and make it into a nightstand or side table. So just wondering if you can sand down particle board and repaint and all that. Thank you for your help.
