Maneuverability and propulsion

  • New fluid thrust vectoring engines allow engines to be more shielded from IR and radar detection, as no mechanical movement is required to change thrust direction. They can vector thrust by up to 30°. These next generation engines have been designed for high fuel efficiency compared to other designs. Afterburner performance has been sacrificed somewhat in return for stellar supercruise capabilities.

  • Advanced fly by wire systems along with its tailless design allow great levels of control using the canards, active aeroelastic wing and thrust vectoring instead of a tail.

  • The active aeroelastic wing can flex to increase rolling performance and aerodynamic efficiency.

  • The wing also uses adaptive compliant technology allowing control surfaces to be integrated into it. The wing itself can bend to control air flow. This saves fuel significantly and is stealthier.

  • The wing configuration is trapezoidal wings with canards, but the lack of tail control surfaces makes it similar to a flying wing with canards.

"Stealth"

  • New radar-absorbent carbon composites have been used extensively, making up 90% of the airframe and control surfaces. They have also allowed for the flexible wing technology used in this plane.

  • Adaptiv 2 panels completely surround the aircraft underneath the radar absorbent materials, excluding the cockpit.

  • Jet exhaust is expelled above the wing where it cannot be as easily seen from below, and is cooled as it exits.

  • The canards and control surfaces can be automatically angled to decrease RCS from certain directions when an enemy aircraft or anti-air system is detected.

  • Despite these measures, conventional stealth is unlikely to be of any use against an equally technologically advanced country. We therefore use many nonconventional and electronic techniques to make the aircraft harder to detect. Gaseous stealth uses water vapor mixed with engine exhaust sprayed onto areas with especially high RCS. This scatters radar when flying through areas with especially good air defence systems making it harder to detect and locate the fighter.

Electronics

  • A total of 18 panoramic electro-optical sensors give the pilot a complete 360° view in their eyepiece. They can also detect missiles and other aircraft, with an advanced IFF system highlighting enemies.

  • They also allow for tracking via camera, this can defeat stealth techniques within visual range by detecting the shape of another vehicle instead of an IR or radar signature. This can be used for guiding missiles and detecting enemies.

Weapons and Defence

  • Very large payload means that the fighter can carry a varied set of bombs and missiles to act as a true swing role and meet any potential scenario.

  • Depleted uranium 30x170mm guided bullets will be used in the new autocannon, with laser designation via automatic lock on or eye tracking.

  • Inbound missiles can be detected by radar, FLIR or electro-optical sensors and shot down by the gun within an arc of a few degrees, acting as a basic CIWS.

A number of new bombs and missiles will be developed for the AF-XX, detailed below:
