MATH and PHYS homework webassign?

I am currently a freshman engineering student and I'm confused as to how exactly webassign works. I understand a code must be purchased, but is there any way to purchase it at a cheaper price than listed in Barnes and Nobles? Any advice would help, my professors require me to purchase these at a total of $257.
