Looking to move

I'm an American looking to move to the UK (specifically the Edinburgh area) within the next 5 years. As far as I've read into it, you have to be a resident for 5 years before citizenship. Other than this broad geneeic information, can anyone help shed more light on job availability, housing, necessary documentation, order of operations for the move? Anything helps. Thanks a lot.
