Next Steps in Decluttering--Feng Shui

I've noticed a huge improvement in our home since we started decluttering. Eight huge carloads of stuff to Good Will, and probably 20 garbage cans of recycling and trash will do that. But we still weren't super happy with the energy of the house. On a whim I had a feng shui consultant come in and review our property.

It was actually fun, and not something I have ever done before! My husband does not believe in Feng Shui, and I'm ambiguous, so I took the approach of thinking of her as someone who is a combo stager and interior designer consultant. It was so helpful to have a fresh set of eyes, and she had a number of suggestions that were cheap or free to implement. She also had a very good eye and didn't know us so her advice felt really objective.

The reason I am sharing is I was so thankful that we had already majorly decluttered. I just cringe to think about how she would have reacted if we had not. She seemed to think our office (despite being a million times better than before) was a total wreck (it is). I don't think she works with many of us who have clutter problems :) We may actually be her messiest clients, which is amazing because we are now pretty darn clutter free except for our "junk room" as my husband called it.

Still, I wanted to share my experience and encourage anyone else who is busy decluttering to consider scheduling a reward or some type of check in for a midway point in the process. It felt really nice to recognize all the work I had done by trying something totally new, that I never would have done for myself before I decided to prioritize making my space a nice place to live. For me it was bringing in a feng shui consultant, but maybe for you it would be something radically different.

I still have a lot of decluttering to do, but I also felt like having her perspective clarified a lot of the things I was uncertain on and saved me from potentially buying things I didn't need, or getting the wrong things that I would later regret. I now have a better sense of how I want to use the space I was stuck on, and how I can move things around to help achieve that. I also really like my place even more now, and am excited to attack the remaining piles and projects with new vigor when I was sort of bored by the whole thing before.
