First day back at an office job, was a nightmare.

Work/Search

Quickie background: I'm a 36F, have suffered from panic disorder and agoraphobia for about 5 years. A couple years ago I did CBT at a clinic that specialized in anxiety and it made a world of difference for me- down to a handful of panic attacks per month. I also take citalopram, and use xanax as a rescue though anymore it does very little for me. My usual triggers are getting overheated, feeling like vomitting, or feeling trapped.

So today, after 5 years of pursuing another line of work, i return to my old career. It's an office job, with people I like, and I worked there for years with nothing but positive experiences. I was a bit jittery about returning, worried my skills are rusty, etc. but overall felt good about it. WELL. It was a disaster. I had three massive panic attacks throughout the day, the first of which caused me to lock myself in the bathroom and lay on the tile floor for 10 minutes. My stomach betrayed me, the xanax did nothing, and I spent the entire day choking back wave after wave of anxiety. None of the techniques I learned to self calm helped, I felt completely overwhelmed.

My question is this, for those of you who work in a cubicle office environment- how do you cope when an acute attack hits? Do your coworkers know about your disorder? Do you take rescue meds? I don't want to get so knocked out I can't still function. I feel like if I had a plan maybe it would help. I have an appointment with my doctor in a week to talk about adjusting the medication I take to help in the short term, she has had me add Buspirone in the past and I have some on hand but honestly I can't remember if it did much to reduce panic attacks. But in the meantime I would welcome any ideas on how to stick it out through this until I adjust to this new routine.
