[Spoilers S2E1] E1 & E2 Observations, Foreshadowing & Clues
I re-watched episodes one and two of season two. It's fascinating to watch, especially with knowledge of the episode seven reveal. I thought I could share some of my observations and discuss them with you.
The opening of episode one at the arcade is worth noting. Here's what happens:
Tyrell stands for a minute wearing an fSociety mask. He removes it and asks,
"Why this mask? It's a bit silly isn't it?"
[His phone vibrates and answers]
"Wellick."
"I see. I understand James."
"Yes, yes I'm aware of Mr. Goddard's [Gideon's] request but it needs to be removed this moment."
"Can you escalate it?"
"Thank you, James."
The camera cuts to Elliot on the computer on an IRC channel with the Dark Army. Here's two screenshots of the discussion (apologies for poor quality): chat and executing the program.
What's happening so far is Tyrell received a call from James Plouffe, the VP of Technology at E Corp. I believe the "it" in their conversation is the honeypot Giddeon planted on the server. Elliot relays the news to the Dark Army via IRC. Remember, James is the one who committed suicide on TV during the interview.
The last of Tyrell we see is when he appears at the desk, asking if the hack is done. Elliot nods yes and gets up. Tyrell then sits down and stares in admiration at the monitor, saying it's as if something has come alive. Elliot slowly moves toward the popcorn machine and reaches for the gun. The scene ends.
What I noticed about this is that we don't get Elliot's perspective. Mr. Robot isn't present either. There aren't any hard clues about Tyrell's disappearance, just that we are lead to assume Elliot pulls the gun on him.
Some other observations throughout episodes one and two:
-
Elliot imagines Mr. Robot shooting him in the head. Why the head? I believe it's symbolic for memory loss and amnesia. When Gideon visits, Elliot looses his grip and his head wound appears.
-
Gideon was an important asset to the FBI, but he was killed in cold blood. Isn't he the only one at AllSafe besides Angela who knew about Elliot's whereabouts prior to 5/9?
-
The creepy man with glasses and hat made an appearance at the cafeteria, the same guy who initiated Elliot's detox/abduction in episode three. The actor's name is Tom Knutson. Who is he exactly?
-
Phillip Price gives off a vibe like Emperor Palpatine, who plays both sides. Think about it. Why would Price be in cahoots with the Chinese Minister of State Security?
-
Mr. X/Sutherland makes his first appearance in episode one as an escort for Tyrell. I think he will be presented as a threat to Elliot later on.
-
Elliot passes by the alley where he got jumped in episode five. There's a sign on the gate that reads, "No Exit." He also passes a church with ISA 41:10 on their sign. Another Redditor pointed this out. Isaiah 41:10 reads,
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
And continues,
"Behold, all those who are angered at you will be shamed and dishonored; Those who contend with you will be as nothing and will perish.…"
-
Clearly this biblical reference is foreshadowing Elliot's comeback
-
The man Angela hooks up with in episode two is the FBI informant, Andre. This was after Gideon visits the FBI. Meaning Angela is a suspect, and why Dom was very suspicious later when they meet in episode six.
-
Ray has to be a prison warden (Wikipedia entry). I notice from the way others around him act, and how Leon addresses him as "Sir." Also note Ray's observation of the basketball players/inmates. What could he and Elliot have spoken about that night?
-
Elliot dozes off during the church group at the end of episode two. The scene cuts to him on the red phone, hearing Tyrell on the other end. Is this a dream sequence?
I'm hoping some of these observations may shed light on what is to come for the remainder of season two. What are your thoughts? Am I wrong about something? Discuss!
