Trying to get back in, need help.

I met a guy that is starting to get into magic. I played in my teenage years but that was a while ago. I'm pretty sure the cards I have left are out of standard.

So now I want to get back in, where do I start? I want to make cool themed decks, but I don't even know the themes anymore. I don't want to just go but loads of boosters and try to figure it out either, which was how I did in the old days.

How can I get up to date with themes, what cards are out there, the current meta, and lore? Also, how can I find people in my area to play with?

Thanks for any advice!
