$1,000 For Appraisal

I paid cash for two vacant lots, I contacted an appraisal company in the area (to see how much equity I have) and they want $1,000 to appraise both vacant lots and wont be able to do it until first week in October - is that price normal?

I've asked why they are charging so much when my parents last month only had to pay $600 on their refinancing for their home.

It makes no sense to me to charge $500 to appraise vacant land.

I don't need my vacant appraised until March 2017, so I'm not in a rush. Will waiting to get an appraisal done in winter when things slow down reduce the price?

Any suggestions welcome.
