Steven Universe (yup) and Coming-Out Advice
Fucking Steven Universe, my God. This is basically another coming-out advice post with context specific flavouring, but hey, it's cathartic for me - feel free to pass on if you're maybe tired of these.
TL;DR: Seemed to have reached mental/emotional break point where I really need to come out, recent Steven Universe episode provided icing on the cake - need advice about how best to approach coming out to traditional-ish West African Mum. [You really only need this context, the text below is mostly just cathartic to type out]
So I've finally reached the point where I think I pretty much need to come out to my mother. To be brief: we (myself, mum + several siblings) are all extremely fucking poor, getting worse and worse each year, and things have been reaching the emotional boiling point in our household where we've basically all had large heart-to-hearts for the first time to each other over the past few weeks - about how tired we all are and how we need to get better at handling each other and ourselves emotionally to survive this.
A large part of my problem communicating emotionally (I'm naturally very stoic anyway) is being in the closet at home when I'm not at uni. It's pulling me apart, and ugly thoughts have been creeping into my head where I doubt a lot of the affection I do get shown because I feel not-welcome in my home due to a hypothetical poor reaction when I do come out. This makes me even more distant than I normally am, generally stresses me out and doesn't help the difficult situation we're all already in. After my latest heart-to-heart where I basically told my mum how her behaviour has had me stressed out for months (I bottle these things up instead of talking about them instantly), she apologised sincerely and after discussing the behavioural changes she needs to make she mentioned something I already know - that I need to not bottle these things up and talk about them.
I'm not sure how much longer I can keep it hidden without having a breakdown, and really, she's right. Also, after that fucking Steven Universe episode (if you watch it you know what I'm on about) I've had to face the fact that keeping this one big thing hidden when it's such a big part of me and trying not to confront it is really the most emotionally unhealthy thing I'm doing right now. But I'm also still afraid of the unknown, of reactions after the fact. On one hand, I really need to do this soon + my mum has suspected I was gay in the past and tried to treat it hilariously appropriately (pretty sure she still suspects but she has stopped asking as I refused to answer back then). On the other, we're obviously all stressed atm and she's straddles the line of being a traditional West African parent on occasion, and has made some homophobic remarks in the past (nothing extreme and not the result of hatred, just some misinformed views/her not really knowing any gay people).
At the moment I'm hypothetically considering telling her when she hopefully drops me off at uni, before her leaving, but not really sure/especially not sure how to approach it. Any advice? [If you did read this to the end, thanks; it's been a long and stressful day.]
