Does anyone else have a hard time taking criticism?

Question

I grew up with the stereotypical Asian parents. I was forced to practice piano. Any mistake - I got an earful from my mother. This is wrong. That is wrong. You just aren't as talented as the 3 year olds who started learning piano because you started at 7. You just can't play as musically as your sister can since you're a guy. Etc.

Fast forward to today, and I can barely take any criticism without feeling like I've been deeply insulted. My girlfriend will get annoyed at me time to time because I fucked something up, like say forgetting to wash the dishes. She'll be annoyed and ask me to do them ASAP. I'll oblige, but deep down I feel really mad and sad and annoyed. Or she'll tell me to "chill" because she wants a bit of space, and I'll be pissy for the next hour because of that single word. And then later I'll cry either to myself or to her. Lol can you believe that - a grown ass man crying over simple, non-demeaning words.

I've tried discussing these issues with her. We've reached compromises.

But I just "know" that I shouldn't be so offended by people telling me to modulate by behavior in small ways. It's not as if she said "Hey dumbass, you forgot to wash the fucking dishes, you lazy son of a bitch." Or "You fucking creep, back the fuck off me for a bit." But it just feels that way to me.

Why am I so offended? Am I the only one that's fucking hurt a lot by little comments? I feel like it just has to do with the way I was raised - I was criticized for basically everything - could this be true?

I'm aware of my problem and I've been actively trying to take things she say less to heart, and I've been talking about my problem with her, so it's not as if I'm trying to blame my parents for everything. I'm just trying to get at the root of the problem so that I don't make the same mistake one day if I have kids.
