is an idling gears a bad gears?

I have Ultimate PC and multitasked back to Chrome last night. When I woke this morning I noticed the fans on my xtreme windforce 980ti were spinning --- which typically only occurs when the GPU is in use. If I multitask Unreal Alpha, Killer Instinct the program essentially "freezes" and the fans aren't spinning because the GPU isn't being used. Not so with Gears; even when multitasking and the game itself is paused the fans will spin.

How bad do you think this is? 24 hours of fans spinning to cool a gpu doesn't sound good.
