Fates Reclass Option Discussion Day 7: Subaki
Warning: Mild Gameplay Spoilers Below
Ah, Subaki. What I wouldn't give to make you better. Because no Birthright/Revelation run has yet occurred where you could be worse. But casting personal biases out to the side for the sake of those who actually get good growths with you, here we go.
Covering the Bases
Subaki makes for an odd Sky Knight. He joins at chapter 7 (Chapter 8 Revelation) as a Level 5 Sky Knight. His bases are as follows.
*22 HP/ 8Str/ 0 Mag/ 13 Skl/ 10 Spd/ 7 Lck/ 9 Def/ 10 Res
Meanwhile, his growths are (following the same order as above bases):
*55/30/20/50/20/25/45/5
Note: This does not include the bonuses from Sky Knight. These are Subaki's base growths.
As you can see, this makes for a much different variation than we normally see from Pegasus Knights in the series. Subaki's higher health and defense make him fairly tanky, especially for a Sky Knight, and his relatively low speed and resistance actually make magic users somewhat of a threat to him later in the game.
How do you solve a problem like Subaki?
Subaki has two major failings in his bases and growths: He has poor speed, and he has poor resistance. Now, his base class does actually alleviate both of these problems pretty well. The first skill Subaki has is Darting Blow, which gives him +5 Speed on Player Phase. Right away, that puts him in doubling territory when it's his turn. Meanwhile, Falcon Knight has Warding Blow as a Level 15 skill, which gives Subaki a whopping -10 Magical Damage when he initiates a fight. This ends up being very useful, so even if you variate from Subaki's base class, I'd say flashing back to Falcon Knight for this skill would be worth it.
- Heart Seal: Subaki has his own base class which ends up helping him a lot for different reasons. If you want a class faster than Sky Knight, I'd give you Samurai, which is exactly what Subaki has. The skills duelists blow and Vantage are iffy, but in a choice between the two, I'd say vantage every time due to Subaki's durability allowing for that possibility. If you want to be a Swordmaster, Astra is a must have. Subaki's great skill growth will mean this skill will never go to waste, leaving you with a very happy Subaki. Master of Arms plays to Subaki's strengths, with high defense, health, and strength growths and middling everything else. As always is the problem with master of arms, though, the skills are kind of iffy and strange to play with.
Friendship options
-
Saizo: Subaki has some pretty great Friendship options all around. Hinata is very unfortunately useless, since Subaki already has his class and Hinata doesn't particularly care about Sky knight. Meanwhile, Saizo is a pretty fun thought to entertain. Subaki actually has a decent strength growth, even if it's possible for you to get screwed over with it (like I did). This means going through E-Ranks isn't absolutely terrible, though an Arms Scroll would be nice. Subaki's shining star here is Lethality, which works relatively well, even if that isn't saying much, with Subaki's high skill growth. Subaki could also dip into Mechanist for Replciate, giving you twice the perfection in your army. Meanwhile, far away, Someone heard Hana's screams of frustration.
-
Azama: Onmyoji and Subaki aren't friends. End of story. However, Great Master can work in Subaki's favor, giving him Miracle with his decent, if not great, luck growths. Renewal works quite well with Subaki's high Health, and Countermagic can finally make him a force against pesky magic users.
-
Niles: Niles is Eh. Admittedly, Movement +1 is good news for a flier, and locktouch could make Subaki a nice utility unit. However, Subaki doesn't really care for anything Bow Knight gives, as he isn't normally bothered too much by Shurikens, and rally skill isn't one of the favorite rallies, at least for me. Adventurer can help Subaki do some avoiding, with Lucky 7 and a high speed growth. However, Pass isn't really worth much to someone who can fly over enemies, and by the time Niles joins Subaki is beginning to take a back seat anyways.
True love, Marriage
Actually, I'm just covering Nohrian marriage, since that's the only thing I'd think about changing.
-
Nyx: I can definitely see the reasoning behind Nyx being Subaki's wife. After all, the famed weakness of Pegasus Knights can be easily trivialized by a special skill Nyx has... besides that, Nyx pretty much wants to give Subaki Dark Knight. Seal Magic will keep Subaki from being killed to death by mages, and Lifetaker is a nice bonus that can heal Subaki when he kills people with questionably high strength. But yeah, unless you want Dark Knight Subaki, this would just be an odd pairing.
-
Selena: Yeah, yeah, we get it. Hardy har har, Selena has severe parental issues. Besides that, this option is kind of meh. Really. It's just not that good. Hero can give Subaki some small steps, like Sol and Axebreaker, but like I discussed with Niles, Bow Knight gives nothing new, and Subaki already has plenty of self-healing options from all the rest of his friends. This is actually the Nohrian marriage option I'd change
please don't kill me
Time for Change
Overall, there are two options I'd change for Subaki: a marriage and a friendship, a Hoshidan and a Nohrian.
-
Hayato: Before you get onto me about Subaki's poor magic growth, I'd like to say that that isn't my focus at all. Instead, I'm more centered on the Basara option. Normally I wouldn't choose to go into something for one skill alone, but with Subaki's skill growth Rend Heaven is simply too tantalizing to pass up. And plus, it gives him something, which is still better than Hinata.
-
Beruka: Subaki's stats are actually quite fitting, in my opinion, for a Wyvern Rider. He's largely strength based, with high defense and health but not great resistance. Overall, it would probably be a pretty fitting class for him.
So there you have it! I hope the new layout is better for you guys than previous iterations!
