New DM looking for a bit of Guidance with first campaign
So I was asked to DM a game at my local game shop due to a shortage of DMs and an abundance of players. I was wanting to run the idea for my campaign through you guys just to see if it sounds interesting:
'Journey through the Tower of Fate' A massive tower reaching into the heavens known to locals as the 'Tower of Fate' spawned out of nowhere. A small town developed around the tower for the adventurers that attempt to summit the tower.
Local legend tells that for whoever reaches the top of the tower, shall be granted a single wish.
From there, I figured the tower would have 22 floors:
Floors 1-20 would have some kind of large scale puzzle or theme that the party would need to work out. And each of these floors would be based on the Major Arcana of tarot cards.
For example, the first floor would be based on the Fool- all of the enemies on that floor are various creatures that are capable of hiding in plain sight like Gargoyles or Animated Objects, with the boss of the floor would be a Giant Room Sized Mimic that the party actually needs to end up inside of to really finish it off.
The floor based on the Chariot would essentially be an obstacle course with the party needing to beat various obstacles in order to outrun some kind of massive, enemy (that could in theory be defeated for a massive reward, but not going to let them know that)
The floor based on the Death tarot would actually require all of the party members to die in order to pass a special gate that reincarnates their physical forms once they pass through it.
The floor based on the Hermit would actually have the party separated, facing enemies/puzzles by themselves and eventually having to face a single greater boss enemy that has divided itself into smaller monsters that will rejoin once the party has gotten back together.
Those are just a couple of them.
Then the final floor, with the BBEG, would have the party facing off against the Evil Queen that was actually sealed inside the tower and uses the lower floors as a way to choose a worthy host so that she may escape. Think sort of a Bloody Mary style evil sorceress that slaughtered entire villages to increase her magical powers and retain her beautiful appearance. The party fights, the party wins. Huzzah.
Then the after the "final" floor would be a treasure room containing a Wish Ring, which I am unsure if I should make it so that the entire group is only given a single wish or if every player gets to use Wish.
I figure depending on if the players actually enjoy the idea, I would extend the campaign into sort of a sandbox with the Tower being the main dungeon with a couple of sidequests that they can run out in the town surrounding the tower and the general area. This plus the size of the main dungeon would hopefully let the players work in a localized area, letting them do some world building of their own like investing to improve a local smithy or even starting up a trade route with some "nearby" cities. Plus with how I plan on doing the loot system allowing them to improve their weapons and armor via slotting various gemstones into their weapons via a local smithy/jeweler, I would hope that I could keep them fairly satisfied for a while.
IF they are not digging it however, I figure I can just expedite the process by chopping out the later floors and just have it be like 13 floors and then the Evil Queen boss fight. No big deal.
So what do you guys think?
