Adopt a child for Holidays

I would like to adopt (sponsor?) a child for the holidays. Does anyone have experience with this and the local non-profit organizations around Dallas? I would prefer not to just give cash, but rather provide gifts for a child who otherwise would not receive anything for the holidays. Also not opposed to adopting a family.
