Am I the only one who feels Overwatch has lost a lot of that superhero vibe?

News & Discussion

I remember in the original announcement trailer for Overwatch, Blizzard really tried to sell the idea that this was their take on the superhero genre. While none of the heroes really have "superpowers" in the true sense of the word, it was definitely the central focus behind Overwatch's design. The kid in the announcement trailer makes mention of characters such as "Soundquake", "Fusionator", and of course "Doomfist". With the release of Ana and the (hopefully) upcoming release of Sombra, I can't really see any characters with names like that entering the fray.

I've got nothing against having heroes like Ana. She fits very well into the story, and she has an interesting mechanic. But nothing about her feels very superhero-y. Unlike fellow sniper Widowmaker, who has a very stereotypical femme fatale villain design, Ana just feels like a normal sniper.

Which brings me to my main point. Blizzard appear to want to make Overwatch seem more like a serious militia group than a cast of Avengers-type crusaders, which I am sure was the original intention. This is most prominent in the more recent digital comics, such as the one which showcases Ana during her Overwatch days. We get a good glimpse into how Overwatch operated, and all of the Overwatch members seem to act and look more like soldiers. I can't see Overwatch getting such colourful characters as a monkey scientist or a satirical skull-faced villain now, let alone have any new heroes with names like "Fusionator".

Am I the only one who feels this way? For me it's a shame, because the superhero aspect of Overwatch is one of the things which attracted me to it and I'm sure it resonated with a lot of other people too, reminding them of their days watching X-Men and other such early morning cartoons about creative superheroes. I might be overthinking this, or maybe I've missed something. Maybe you disagree entirely. But it's been a long time since Blizzard have released something Overwatch-related which felt superhero-y to me.

This was a bit of a rant so let me know if I made any mistakes. I'd love to know your opinions, and sorry for the long post.
