Project Fi to Cricket - port to Voice first & forward to Cricket?

I think am going to jump from Fi to Cricket with a group to allow for some more data use flexibility. However, I really like the ability to text and call from Hangouts on any device with Fi, especially if the other person is not a Hangouts user. Will I be able to keep this feature if I port my Fi # to Voice, get a new # from Cricket, and just forward my Voice # to my new Cricket number? Is this a sound plan? Any downfalls?
