[Crow Business] The new spoiler tag updates are now live!

CB

r/asoiaf strives to be a community where all fans of the series are welcome to come together, share our ideas and learn from each other.

Our growing community means more people with different ideas and knowledge to bring to the table about the series—but also different needs.

To make the subreddit accessible and inviting to different fans, we've tweaked the spoiler tagging system to make it easier for you to sort content and find the tinfoil Valyrian steel you want—and none of the stuff you don't.

And more fans equals more eyes on your newest theories, more new content for you to read—and a bigger, better community of crows seeking to understand the series together.

#Spoiler Tags

For most users, what you need to know is:

  • Main: The books and show.
  • Extended: Other officially released statements and material, INCLUDING TWOW SAMPLE CHAPTERS.
  • Production: Production stuff on the next season.

For the detail-oriented:

  • If you like diagrams, you can look at this. Each ring contains the information in the rings inside it.

  • If you like tables we have this. This is just a snippet of our bigger spoiler tag listing.

  • The Production scope is only available for posts discussing information about future seasons, and will be manually filtered by the moderators, similar to what we did on Sundays and Mondays during Season 6.

  • No Spoilers and the book-only scopes are the same as before.

  • Unauthorized releases of finished content will continue to be restricted to Megathreads with the tag (Spoilers Infinite).

For even more details on the spoiler system updates, see this earlier post.

#Data

u/fat_walda has prepared a report on data from our mid-season survey. The report contains questions relevant to the revision of the spoiler tag system. While this was not the only data we considered when making our updates, it did influence our decision to phase out Spoilers Everything, and helped to inform the appropriate spoiler tag level for various kinds of media.

Here is the data presentation relevant to the changes we made.

HEY EVERYONE. I REALLY REALLY LOVE THESE CHANGES, I'M SUPER THRILLED TO NOT BE ABLE TO POST/READ EVERYTHING POSTS!

Can you give me an example (keeping in mind that Crow Business posts are no spoilers) of how this will keep you from posting or reading content that was previously covered under Spoilers Everything? This is an organizational change, not a content change.

4†
iamthewookieenow•

If I read that say...Ser Pounce is seen at the wall. I now know that information. So if I make a post saying "how is Ser Pounce going to end up on the Iron Throne" obviously I now think it's going to involve him joining the Walkers. Now there might be some foreshadowing for that (and personally I think this is as obvious as Jon's Parentage) but the reason i'm convinced about that and will say so is due to a production leak. So using Extended doesn't really cover that, even though i'm not explicitly talking about Production leaks, the knowledge I have and will talk about in some way is due to that.

I do actually think a Production tag is a good idea but I think implementing it like this is going to result in people being unintentionally spoiled. Also I struggle posting here at the best of times nevermind when the tag system keeps changing.

14
ShoelessHodorRU? On-On!•

Sure....(WARNING ALL THE NAMES AND SITUATIONS TO FOLLOW ARE MADE UP)

So let's say that I have a question/theory/comment about a Stark's special needs cousin "Bleh" and how I think her son/daughter/spawn might be a time traveling fetus from Narnia. I base this on the fever dreams of her cousin who was chugging milk of the poppy in book one.

I want to tag it spoilers all (back when that was a thing before everything was anything) because I want to know if my theory/question/comment has any legs. I don't care if the cousin died in a short bus pileup in book one, I want to know if someone has inside info from grainy pictures on the set or from GRRM's ass tattoo.

I want to tag it spoilers all because I want to know....

Next time we rename "Spoilers All", can we just go back to "All" and stop jumping from All to Everything to Infinite to Super-Duper?

32
Jen_SnowOPMOD"You told me to forget, ser."•

Infinite is not analogous to "All" or "Everything". Infinite was even above "Everything" when we had to use it last year. So it's not that we renamed "Everything" this time the way we did with "All". We just got rid of it entirely.

Why though? It was by far the most popular tag?

You just answered your own question. Everyone used "Everything" even when it wasn't necessary and it was keeping people that avoid production spoilers from taking part into any discussion on this subreddit.

13
Fat_WaldaDRAMAQUEENINDANORF!•

Exactly. The usage of Everything didn't align with the reported content that the users are avoiding spoilers from, and the use of "Everything" was misleading, as it never actually included everything. This update has simply moved some media to a different tag, and given a more precise name to the tag which contains show production info, and little else different than Extended.

How is this so hard for you? Going by your own super duper expanding ring model, everything within "Main" and "Extended" can simply be listed as PUBLISHED; while everything withing "Production" and "Infinite" can be listed as UNPUBLISHED.

You are nuking the fuck out of this. Just separate the information between published and thus confirmed sources against secretive leaks and thus unpublished sources.

18
caravaggio2000•

I vote to put this guy in charge of spoiler tags.

6
guildensterncrantzMODIt's only Legos and Duplos•

We already have a Published tag, but it serves to cover finished-book-without-show material (some people are avoiding the show). Then Main and Extended are two different levels of the same thing: canon and very-extra canon, here because a relevant number of people are avoiding the TWOW sample chapters, HBO info and such.

As for the last divide - Production and Infinite - it's here because there's quite a bit of difference between seeing "Character X appears in place Y in S07", and half of the S07 plot leaking, or the full first 4 episodes of same season (hopefully it doesn't happen!).

Plus, the Infinite leaks tend to be so big, and spread so fast, that if they were allowed "in the wild", a random redditor may innocently open r/asoiaf one day, and see half the plot spoiled before they even know there's a LEGIT major leak. That's why Infinite is staying quarantined by mods (plus, the sources for that tend to be pirates, which is yet another can of worms).

2†

What tag do I use if I want to link to an old thread? Like if i'm linking to a theory that's [Spoilers Everything]?

16
MightyIsobelMODOingaryen Boingaryen•

a theory that's [Spoilers Everything]

It would be tagged (Spoilers Extended), unless it contains information spoiler-y info about unaired seasons of the show. Thanks for asking!

12
Fat_WaldaDRAMAQUEENINDANORF!•

That was a really good question. Because if it's old stuff, it might have been what we could classify as "Production" at the time, but is now old news, so Extended would be fine.

11
SerBiffyCleganeI say, what?•

How do I format a link inside of a spoiler tag - I've been trying, but I can't figure it out. :(

1
MightyIsobelMOD•

To create a spoiler tag, use this code:

[Spoilers Extended](/s "Things happen")

to get this:

Spoilers Extended

I haven't seen links successfully tagged inside spoiler tags. But this format is acceptable:

(Spoilers Extended) link to Spoiler things.

But I see you're discussing spoiler-tagging [here] (https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/55ormh/spoilers_extended_can_we_just_be_thankful_one/d8dlq3o?context=5). It looks like Automod re-filtered your OPs when you edited them recently. We would discourage you from editing old posts that way as long as what you wrote then is rules-compliant.

1
caravaggio2000•

So... can I use Spoilers Infinite? I understand what the mods are trying to do here and how people that want to remain unspoiled by the show would appreciate this. However, the reason I liked using Spoilers ALL or Spoilers Everything so much, even if my post didn't necessarily have spoilers for everything, was I didn't want people to feel restricted on what they were posting. For example, if I'm posting about people's thoughts on the ultimate fate of Jon Snow, I want that discussion to pull from all available resources.

Maybe it is just because it is new, but this new system of labeling feels very complicated. Now, if infinite isn't what we should use for everything, it is production, but I think that most people see that and think "show", but it's books, show, and stuff about the show to come. Then when (When?!?!When George?!?!?!) TWoW comes out, I think someone who doesn't want to be spoiled on TWoW, but doesn't mind being spoiled for the show is going to think "production" doesn't include TWoW stuff, but it does. I think, especially for the casual person coming to the sub, this is going to be very confusing.

14
erastus25•

I think, especially for the casual person coming to the sub, this is going to be very confusing.

Seriously. I gave up on understanding the spoiler tags BEFORE this update. Now it's even more hopeless.

5
JoeMagicianMODBest of 2015: Best New Theory•

Spoilers Infinite is just the title given to the mega threads from last season when huge chunks of the plot were spoiled.

Production is more or less Everything. Basically the TL:DR version is Main is all the aired episodes and published books. Extended is Official previews plus main, stuff like sample chapters, trailers, etc. Production is unofficial previews plus extended, stuff that wasn't meant to be released by HBO or GRRM like photos of sets, extras talking about scenes, etc. Infinite is just for when things get crazy, like if episodes leak again. Like megathreads for these topics from last season, the mod team will make "infinite" threads and re-direct to them. There's still the TWOW individual book spoiler tag as well for when the book gets close and more news. You can use production at any time, just be sure to reference production material and you'll be good to go. From what I've seen so far, we've approved most threads that have used production minus reposts. It's just that there's not much news going on right now.

-5
caravaggio2000•

Like I said, I get what you guys are trying to do and I'm sure that it wasn't easy to come up with this, but I think your explanation proves what I'm saying... it's too complicated.

I might be wrong... and maybe the data you collected shows otherwise, but it seems to me the majority of people on here want to be able to reference and use spoilers from every source in their discussions. Previously, it seemed like most threads were Spoilers All or Spoilers Everything for this reason.

You said we can use Spoilers Production at any time, just be sure to reference production material... so that isn't the catch all for someone that wants the discussion to be open to everything. If I want to discuss every possible outcome for Jon Ham, bastard of the Holiday Dinner, but don't have a specific piece of production material to reference, then "Spoilers Production" is the wrong tag for me to use. If I use "Spoilers Extended" and casual reddit poster Porkins would want to add an awesome shot he took on vacation of Jon Ham being sliced up on the set of Ham of Bones to the discussion, they might feel they shouldn't since the scope of the thread doesn't include that.

Again, I'm not trying to pee on anyone's cornflakes. I know being a mod is often a thankless job and I know everyone tried to make the best system possible... but I think this system just isn't going to work for most people.

I'd suggest putting up a vote for keeping the tag "Spoilers Everything" or "Spoilers All" at least with the current setup with the understanding that it encompasses all spoilers from everywhere, except in the case where whole episodes are leaked ahead of time or if something like the TWoW manuscript was leaked (won't happen with the way GRRM has his computer), then the mods only use Spoilers Infinite.

I could be wrong, but I think most people want a simple catch all that includes spoilers from everything... that they don't have to think about.

Don't take this the wrong way, but what I'm hearing from the mods here is basically, "We already know some people don't like the system. We don't want to discuss that it might be wrong or that there might have been better alternatives. We don't want to make any other changes or even let the community discuss it."

Maybe the majority will love the new system, maybe they won't. Seems to me the community should be allowed to discuss it and have our voices heard.

I've really enjoyed this subreddit for years and I think I've been (overall) a positive and contributing member, but stuff like this (and I know it wasn't the intention) makes me want to find somewhere else to go to have open discussions about all things ASoIaF. :(

You might be interested in r/TheWeirwoodNetwork/. It's a new sub that basically strives to be r/asoiaf without any rules against spoilers, including leaks. No vague titles along the lines of "why a certain character made that decision", no spoiler tags, just free discussion about all things ASOIAF and GOT. Currently, it only has 205 subscribers but it looks like it will eventually develop into an active community. I think a lot of people here who have a problem with the new spoiler policy would prefer to post in that sub instead.

I'm sorry if that's the impression you got from us. I'm just going to share my feelings as a mod.

We know some people don't like the system. We did put a lot of thought into these changes, which by and large are a minor shift in spoiler policy. We take lots of lots of data into consideration when making a change, including the data I prepared above. We discussed many alternatives. There are no "right" or "wrong" systems because we have a very large (approaching 350k) and very diverse community here, and we can't create one system that will maximize every single user's happiness. We can optimize and try to find the solution that meets as many needs as possible, and is still physically possible to manage from a moderator standpoint. It's silly to say we won't make changes when we just introduced this policy, and we also get criticized when we make changes too frequently. It doesn't make sense to change the system immediately based on a few predictions when we can instead assess how the system works using better data of actual performance.

And with that said, to say that we aren't allowing a space for the community to discuss it is ironic, considering we are posting on such a space now. We hear you. It's not that we don't care about your opinions; they are very helpful and valuable. We welcome everyone's input because sometimes very good ideas come from users rather than moderators. But you are one crow amongst 350k. Not immediately accepting your suggestions is not the same as ignoring them.

4
caravaggio2000•

We understand the arguments against the spoiler tag system update, we're gonna go ahead and see how it works in practice before making any further changes. Thanks for your input.

I understand your frustration and while I agree with some posters sentiment, I don't agree with the the way they are trying to say it. As I said, I understand being a mod is not an easy job and that you can never make everyone happy.

What I asked for was a meta thread to let the community discuss the option of keeping a "Spoilers All" or "Spoilers Everything" tag. While you are correct that people could discuss that here, the actual purpose of this thread is for you to inform us of the changes and for people to ask questions about those changes... or at least that is what it seems like.

When I get a response to the request for a thread like that, I get a response like this...

We understand the arguments against the spoiler tag system update, we're gonna go ahead and see how it works in practice before making any further changes. Thanks for your input.

That doesn't read to me like this is open to discussion or that you want to hear peoples views on the changes and possible tweaks. It reads like, "This is the way it is for now, deal with it, maybe we'll make changes later, we don't want to hear anyone's opinions on this any longer."

You are correct that I am only one member of the subreddit. However, the majority of people, other than mods, in this thread have expressed two concerns. 1. That the system is confusing and 2. That the lack of a catch all for open discussion like "Spoilers Everything" or "Spoilers All" limits discussion and is frustrating.

It would seem to me that if the majority of people previously posted as "Spoilers All" or "Spoilers Everything", then that was the preference of the majority of those 350k Crows, not just me. So, again respectfully, it seems to me that you are doing the opposite of what you say your intention is... you are creating a system to cater to a small group of crows versus the majority, who would seem to prefer a version of "Spoilers All".

Perhaps I'm right, perhaps you are, but doesn't it make sense to make a meta thread to ask just that? I have never seen such a thread posted. If just ten percent of the crows here want to keep that sort of tag, isn't the 35k of posters like that worth keeping it?

I don't know! Let's find out by making a thread specifically about that.

4
caravaggio2000•

Can I also add...

  1. Your survey only included a small sample of the actual number of users and those results are probably skewed since anyone responding was probably someone with a high interest in a change to the tag system.

  2. The questions in the survey imply the retention of a Spoilers All/Spoilers Everything tag. 94% of respondents in the survey responded that most things or everything should be allowed under the Spoilers Everything tag. The majority of respondents indicated that nothing should be restricted in the Spoilers Everything tag and most of those that responded differently only wanted leaks to be excluded.

Every question in the survey implies there would be a Spoilers Everything tag. I see no question or data where anyone responded and said "Let's get rid of Spoilers everything".

Your own conclusion says that there needed to be a tag above Extended, but below Everything. You made a tag for the leaks, which makes sense (Infinite). How anyone can conclude from that survey that any of the 350k users wanted to get rid of the Spoilers All/Spoilers Everything tag all together is beyond me, especially considering the question was never asked.

11
BookshelfstudMODHouse Words: "We are for horses"•

So, like this thread we posted before deciding to roll out the new system, in which we asked for feedback from the community?

Reddit posts are just about the worst possible forum to gauge public opinion. The loudest, shrillest, or wittiest voices usually rise to the top, while anyone with a remotely cool or mellow opinion on the topic either doesn't post or ends up at the bottom. The upvote/downvote system doesn't lend itself well to level-headed discussion, it lends itself to the internet equivalent of performance art. While we do hold our monthly meta threads, and we did ask the community before rolling this out, ultimately we have to take these threads with a grain of salt because of how easy it is on reddit for a few loud voices to dominate the entire conversation.

At this point, we aren't going to close the barn door well after the horses are out (or however that saying goes). We want to see how this change works for the subreddit over the next few months, both through metrics - subscribers, traffic, etc, but also most likely a survey - and through meta discussion threads, including one we'll do in a month or two asking for feedback on how the system is working out so far.

And at the end of the day, we can't keep writing essays like these in reply to all the feedback we get. While we always appreciate feedback, especially from users who clearly care about this subreddit so much, there's only so much we can keep up with at a time. If we're not replying to you, it's because we have to get some other stuff done too.

cheers

2†
caravaggio2000•

Okay if the discussion in the thread wasn't a good indicator, then why didn't you go by the result of your survey in which 94% of the voters said that everything or most things besides leaks should be allowed under Spoilers Everything?

That thread you indicate is not what I asked, I asked if there was any thread where the community was ever asked if they wanted to get rid of Spoilers Everything specifically.

6
roastpeacock•

It's clear a lot of people were blindsided by the changes, but that confuses me. The spoiler system was talked over in maybe a dozen meta threads and survey threads, all stickied, this past year, and there were a couple of stickied threads about the new system before it was rolled out. I get that some users choose not to read meta threads, but that's their choice. I fully agree that the community should have their voices heard, but aren't multiple surveys and a year of meta threads enough?

2
caravaggio2000•

It's interesting to me that almost all your posts are about the spoiler tags and in those meta threads...

The point is the surveys and threads before the change was made all implied Spoilers Everything would remain in place. 96% of people in the survey said Spoilers Everything should have no restrictions or only be restricted about posting leaks to whole shows or plots.

No one voted to have spoilers everything removed, because that wasn't a question. If the mods wanted that considered, they should have made it a question.

1
roastpeacock•

Yes, and?

I honestly never saw that. Can you give an example?

96% of people in the survey said Spoilers Everything should have no restrictions or only be restricted about posting leaks to whole shows or plots.

Which question are you referring to? One of the slides says 34% didn't want unverified leaks and 35% didn't want verified leaks in Spoilers Everything.

If the mods wanted that considered, they should have made it a question.

That's fair. They could have surveyed the userbase about the proposals.

hyperfocus_Disregard monarchy, acquire chickens•

Loving the survey results. Is the raw data going to be released by any chance? I saw u/AdmiralKird post an example of what was collected in the previous thread, and I'd love to play around with it (or even just see correlations/heatmaps for some of the variables).

Also, regarding the spoiler scopes; Infinite is stated to include "Unauthorized releases of finished content" (this is described in the earlier post to mean "as finished as the source could see it"). However, third party transcripts of some of the TWOW chapter readings could be interpreted to fit this description, and I'm curious to know where these fit.

10
Jen_SnowOP"You told me to forget, ser."•

We're unlikely to release the raw data as that isn't something we've done in the past but if you have a specific idea in mind, we could discuss it.

Transcripts of TWOW that were unauthorized -- as happened with The Forsaken chapter -- aren't allowed to be posted on r/asoiaf. Discussion of the chapter, however, is allowable in Spoilers Extended. Our thinking is that the discussion itself was never restricted so it would have made its way into Extended through people's notes and recollections.

Does that help?

All good! I was primarily interested in looking at correlations between different variables. For an example or two, it would be interesting to see if more frequent posters are more likely to fit into a particular user demographic (e.g. gender or age or nationality), or if my fellow lurkers are more likely to avoid leaked spoilers... or [...]. I just like exploring unique datasets, I guess... :P

I have mixed feelings about this change but I wanted to say thank you for the data presentation. It's good to see you've put a lot of thought into this and it does put it in perspective a bit seeing that there is actually a real demand for spoiler filtering as well as for unfiltered discussion.
