Honestly I think a big part of why men like Earl get derided as ugly is because they have strong, black facial features. With Earl its his large lips. With Jay Z it's his lips and maybe his nose. (And now people are calling his daughter ugly for resembling him)
Racism aside, I think the other reason Earl is seen as ugly is that he went through his awkward adolescent phase when he was blowing up. Like, I'll admit he was a goofy looking motherfucker a few years ago. Now tho, he just looks like an average dude with a slightly fucked up hairline
