Craft beer
In the city for the evening and staying downtown near the market, any suggestions as to where I can explore local craft beer?
Thanks for the replies everyone. Starting the rounds now

Tooth and Nail on... Irving, I believe, in Hintonburg is easily the best brewery in the city right now, churning out consistently delicious beer. Nice spot to hang out, as well.
Arrow and Loon has more of a 'pub' feel, but Scotty does a great job of keeping intriguing and tasty beers on tap.
I've been meaning to check it out. It's like a 15-minute walk from here.
The new food @ T&N is pretty good too. Small apps but good with the delicious beer.
Half cut already, trying to get to as many of these places as possible!
By hitting these 3 places in the market you will get a good sample of local (Ottawa and Ontario) craft beers: Black Tomato, Brother's Beer Bistro*, SmoqueShack. Waller St. brewery is around the corner. I would avoid Clocktower and Lowertown.
You can hit the following pubs on Elgin St. nearby: Sir John A.*, Manx and Lt. Pump.
There is Bier Markt and D'Arcy McGee's on Sparks St. I would avoid Les 3 Brasseurs.
Around Bank St. in Centretown there is Atomic Rooster and Union 613. Take a quick trip to Lansdowne (farther south on Bank St.) and you have Local Lansdowne, Craft Beer Market* and Arrow and Loon*.
If you are on Wellington St. West (not the one than runs next to the Parliament), there is Hintonburg Public House, Tooth and Nail (brewery), Beyond the Pale (brewery; doesn't sell by the glass) and Wellington Gastropub*.
You can check what's on tap at Brother's Beer Bistro by going to beermenus.com You can also see what others were drinking at other places by checking untappd.com
(Asterisk denotes the largest number of craft taps)
Bier Market has a huge selection of imported beer, but very little in the way of local craft beer.
True but they do have some seasonals that are sometimes not available elsewhere in town. Right now they have Amsterdam's Maverick & Gose, for example.
Black Tomato is great for local beers (not just Ottawa but the valley) and has a quiet patio in a courtyard shared with 2 other restaurants!
SmoQue Shack has an excellent rotating tap list, which usually includes an offering from the following local craft breweries:
Often has excellent offerings from some Toronto/GTA craft breweries as well.
And delicious meatstuffs.
Go here if you can, good local beers and barbecue. Get some brisket, some ribs of your choice, and maybe some andouille sausage. oh, and the mac and cheese. Might as well add pulled pork too. Just order everything on the menu.
Beyond The Pale and Tooth & Nail are the best local breweries going in Ottawa right now. The breweries aren't right downtown but worth the trip! T&N has a nice brewpub as well, BTP just has a storefront but you can find their beers in different bars around town as well. Pink Fuzz is a fantastic grapefruit wheat.
Dominion and Bicycle are both contenders for the title of best local breweries too.
Dominion City is FANTASTIC. My only complaint is that it's a growler-only brewery, and the deposits can quickly add up. But the amazing quality of the beer makes it very worthwhile. I'm probably going to eat the deposit on a few growlers when my Ottawa job is finished, just so I can take some of their beer home.
Haven't seen DC on taps very often though... only at BITE Burger. Anywhere else?
Huge fan of em as well. Just kind of a pain in the ass to get to for me
Lieutenants Pump often has them...
pretty sure Live on Elgin! has DC Too... I haven't seen Bicycle in many bars here... but the brewery is a 4min bike ride from my place... the Jalapeno "Juan Almonte" is friggin' awesome.
Tennesy Willems has DC on tap
I guess, DC and Bicycle do very good examples of classic styles but I find that BTP and T&N do a better job of presenting new styles or coming up with unusual ideas without getting too crazy. I would think that would be more interesting for someone looking to try something that you can't get anywhere else.
DC's marmalade earl gray saison was awesome though, normally I don't enjoy the "kitchen sink" saisons that have been coming out a lot lately but that one was really good.
yes and yes.
I'd rank Broadhead above all else in the city, IMHO. ......Pink Fuzz though, that has got to be one of the single best beers crafted in the region. It's outstanding.
Hands down go visit Pub Italia on Preston. They have a wide variety of beers on tap and have something called "The Beer Bible". They have a lot of Ontario Craft Beers and a lot of local Ottawa made ones.
The Beer Bible is the stuff of legend. It's amazing, and unmatched in the city. It's more of a beers of the world experience though, not a really compelling local beer option.
No that's true but still an awesome experience and they do carry a lot of the more popular local beers on tap. Maybe not all but still a great place to check out.
go to CRAFT in Lansdowne. About 2km from the market. I've 100 beers on tap mostly from ottawa and ontario
Uber to L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer.
Not a big selection of Ontario beer but an enormous selection of Quebec and International beer. By far the best selection in the area. Tons of rare beers you won't find anywhere else in the area.
You are in luck, the Ottawa craft beer scene is awesome right now. You won't be disapointed. The market has really embraced it too, anywhere you go you'll find quality local examples to try ..........just be specific, and ask for a local craft option and any place should have some variety for you to try.
Some noteable breweries that have great coverage, Beaus and Kichissippi. If you find a Beynd the Pale, or Bicycle, you wont be disapointed. As noted below, Broadhead is my personal favorite, but they don't do a great job of getting their products in local establishments, sadly.
Enjoy your stay.
Black Tomato has 4 broadhead beers on tap (Longshot White, Blueberry, Rye and Ginger Ale and the Tnagerine IPA) now and usually a minimum of two at all times. (Source, I bartend there.)
Amazing.
If you don't mind hopping over to the Quebec side, I'd also highly recommend the Gainsborough Pub, right near the grey government Portage complex (9 Rue Aubry). They've got a couple of incredible IPAs that are well worth sampling, though quite high alcohol. Orange Tie Wrap is my current favourite.
Clock tower Brew Pub on Clarence would be closest, but I prefer their locations on Elgin St. And down Bank.
Its pumpkin beer season, and I personally LOVE the clocktower pumpkin beer.
you probably also love pumpkin spice lattes you basic bitch.
Royal oak on Laurier has $4 Pints after 9pm and half price apps (For september only.)
You want to hit up Brothers Bistro or the Arrow and Loon.
Waller Street is in the area
None ofthe other breweries are in east and west but if you are willing to travel we have lots of good options.Lieutenant's Pump has a really wonderful tap list too, and is in between Brother's Bistro and the Arrow and Loon.
Atomic Rooster is great if you're in centretown.
The Pump also has the 10$ burger and beer!
like...combined? That's a silly price.
I thought the Rooster's $14 Burger & Beer deal was really good (it still is)
Yeah combined. If you add fries you are under 15$ after taxes.
There are 3 breweries in that area: Cloktower, Lowertown and Waller St.
Yes you can get good beer at Waller Street, forgot about that.
Go to Brothers Bistro. Get their flights, and the Megatron Board of meats and cheeses. You will die a happy man.
