Found this little guy out in the woods. He moved pretty quick, so sadly this is the only photo I have. I've went through the list of snakes in my state, but couldn't identify this one. His head was rather triangular, but he looks nothing like the few venomous snakes in my area. Any help? Thanks.
No, I found this one just across the Savannah River in South Carolina, roughly 15 miles away from the one in the main post (outside of Augusta). The small one was about 30 yards from the lake, the larger one was within a mile of the river. More or less the same type of woods.
Just so you know, head shape is useless for telling if a snake is venomous, as many nonvenomous snakes have triangular heads (and in other parts of the world many venomous snakes have round heads)
That's what I thought, but a friend I was with swore by it. I typically just try to determine it by the colors and patterning. Thanks for the heads up!

Gartersnake, Thamnophis sirtalis. Harmless to humans
Ah, okay, thanks! Is it just a younger version of this snake? I found this one in the same region, but this one is significantly larger (~2.5 feet).
Did you find that one further south / towards the coast? It's also a gartersnake. They are currently recognized as the same species.
