Can someone help me with transitioning?
Okay so I tried posting this elsewhere and I didn't get any responses then it got deleted from the page so Im trying it here. I DM'd my first game with all new players and everyone was instantly in love with the game. My friend, in whom I am very proud of, decided that he wants to try DMing our second game with his own homebrew one shot session. My questions are:
- How do I implement my character into this world (from being DM)
- How does my friends character take a break for a session
- How do we go from Town A to Town B back to Town A

Have you considered just having the other DM's game happen in another part of the world, parallel to your own? This would completely free you from the burden of explaining things and would give other players a chance to try out new classes.
Doing it the way you suggested is very possible though. We ran a campaign a few years back with 3 rotating DMs. Each of us would run for a month or two. When someone new took the DM seat their character would go off to do something that their character wished to do (check in on the family farm, research an old knightly order, go lift weights for a while...). We made sure that all of our characters were created to be in the party but also gave them motivations for things they wanted to do outside the main quest. This made it much easier to drop in and drop out characters and swap DMs. We typically also did a change over when travelling from one location to another so DMs could prepare in advance without stepping on anyone else's toes.
For implementing your own character now, handle it as if a player character died and a new one is joining. Have their motivations align so that it makes sense for them to join the party. Or have a "quest giver" ask the party to allow their spymaster/shieldbearer/court wizard to accompany them.
thank you homie
