[Meta] Thanks to /r/AndroidGaming, the next update of the /r/Android App Store will feature a MASSIVE list of the BEST games on Android, picked by YOU!
edit: it's live!
Most of you are probably subscribed to r/android, so you might have seen our the sticky thread over there promoting the new '/r/android App Store' which is really just a front-end app for the wiki page we've been curating for the past 2 years. One user in the comments section recommended we reach out to the mods of r/AndroidGaming to get a list of the best games on Android, as recommended by Redditors.
The mods here pointed us towards this 7 month old thread which put together a massive Google Doc of the games you guys recommend. We then got to work.
We pulled all of the links from the Google Doc, added a description of the game, formatted them into markdown, and made sure that they fit the format that the current r/Android app wiki requires. That means we've split the Doc into apps based on whether or not they were originally for mobile devices (Android Originals) or if they were ported from console/PC (Ports). We then used a Play Store scraper to further sort these apps into the categories mentioned in the Play Store listing (eg. Strategy, Puzzle, Arcade, Action).
Finally, since that Google Doc is a few months out of date, we browsed this sub by /top and updated the list with about 50 or so games released from the summer until now to make the list more up to date with any new recommendations.
What does that give us? Thanks to you guys, we've made the biggest list of user recommended Android games anywhere on the Internet. No need to sift through 50 different articles from 50 different blogs that just dump game links from people who haven't actually played the game; no need to wade through a giant, unorganized Google Doc that only tells you the title of the game; and no need to search through dozens of old Reddit threads for recommended games. This list has about ~400 games across all different categories (including a list of emulators on Android), and will soon be available in the r/Android App Store (the name is still up in the air).
u/mDarken has already reworked the parsers to enable detecting this new category in the app wiki. All that we have left to do is rework the UI to accommodate this new list, and the app update should be ready by Friday, according to u/Multimoon. So get hyped, and expect to see this major update in a few days :)
