Reddit is what America Online should have been.

Au contraire. I used to hang out with a bunch of fast-typing screenwriters in a private (but huge) chatroom, called, "Hollywood Tonight," in the early nineties. It was like a funny, exclusive, online club. Reddit is low rent and mean, comparatively. (and no one knows anyone here; even if you self-curate, people use throwaway accounts, so you have no idea if it's the same person.)

31/m/va here but when I was a kid we phished AOL accounts so my experience was very different. I took on lots of false identities.

AOL was fun when you were 15 and had a macro-flooding script and ICMP weapon.
